Junior teams bowl in Midrand

MIDRAND - On a weekend that saw Midrand Cricket Club’s two Saturday sides lose ground to their opponents as both teams suffered loses, the beginning of the club's junior cricket season brought some much-needed upliftment.

With both U13 and U15 sides scheduled to play their opening matches, the club was abuzz with excitement.

The juniors arrived at their match eager to pit their talents against other aspiring juniors. The club’s chairperson, Nevish Rampersadh, said it was exceedingly gratifying to have reached this point where youngsters in and around Midrand are afforded the opportunity to play club cricket.

The club’s excitement, however, would have to wait another week as both opposition teams failed to field their sides. Disappointed, the youngsters had to settle for a friendly match among themselves.

On Sunday, the Sunday side was in action against Edenglen.

Having won the toss and electing to bowl, the side was put to the sword in the opening overs. Keeping their heads up, however, the side continued to plug away. The first breakthrough came in the 10th over with the score on 46, with another big total threatening. With some clever bowling changes and good fielding, the side managed to restrict their hosts to 145 all out in the 34th over.

In their chase, the side made a solid start with the opening pair putting on 72 runs in 10 overs. From that point on, the side cantered to the finish line and reached the hosts’ total in 22 overs with the loss of just two wickets.

The match featured standout performances from Abie Rakgoale, who took three wickets for 15 in his six overs and also contributed a valuable 37 not out, and Anesh Muganpersad who scored a quick fire 59 in 37 balls.
