For the love of jumping

MIDRAND - It seems Bruce Dewar's showjumping luck at Penny Place Stables knows no bounds.

Dewar, who is often the pace-maker at shows hosted by the stables at its Blue Hills premises, took the Porsche-sponsored 1.3m victor ludorum at the event on 8 and 9 February in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

The show’s arena showed the love with a Valentine’s-inspired jump with hearts and flowers as well as many other colourful jumps inspired by Penny Place’s painter and gardener David Zimkhona Tsheke.

While 8 February saw many lower-grade riders compete over the unique jumps, the huge downpour saw 120mm of rain fall over the stable yard and caused the higher-grade classes on 9 February to be delayed by an hour.

Nonetheless all six classes did compete, and the stable’s Anneli Wucherpfennig and Trevor Bern said as the classes went on, the less the effects of the rain affected the horses and riders.

“The Porsche-sponsored classes attracted good entries and the showjumping was as exciting as ever,” said Bern.
Dewar, riding Oleander, won the 1.3m Porsche Championship with Kyla Griffin riding Callaho For Love in second place and Lynda Rabie riding Wahnfried in third.

Dewar took the 1.3m Porsche Speed Stakes riding Atimo and Bryce McCall showcased his riding talents by placing second on Callaho Don Pilot and third on Callaho Ragtime.

The 1.2m speed class saw the Steytler family take top honours. Carika Steytler won the class riding Last Verse, with Bianca Steytler riding Burnside in second place and Carika in third place on Cosy Secret. Carika and Last Verse also won the 1.2m championship class with Bianca and Burnside in second place again and Shepard Zira riding Uberatti placed third.

Dewar showed his showjumping talents again in the 1.1m speed stakes, where he won first place on Mesquite and third place on AEA Maximillian. Gene Gebhardt riding Contacto placed second.

In the 1.10 championship class, Claudia Fernandes riding Unlimited Call won, followed by Brigitte Snyman riding Font Columbia in second, Brittany Dennison riding Come Spring in third.

Wucherpfennig said the show also saw five development riders compete over the two-day show.

Penny Place Stables recently moved to its Blue Hills premises from Paulshof but Wucherpfennig and Bern are pleased that the show venue is attracting more riders and spectators with every show. Wucherpfennig, who has competed in top classes internationally, remarked on the “exciting” level of the showjumping.

The stable’s next show will be held on 29 and 30 March.
