Mountain bikers prepare for Cape Epic

MIDRAND - The All-Terrain Nomads is Midrand’s largest family mountain biking club.

In a month’s time, the country’s largest mountain bike race will commence – the Cape Epic is a gruelling event which tests riders to their limits.

Cyclists will ride over 900km, dealing with more than 15km of rocky and rough terrain in eight days.

Midrand will be represented by Steve Parker, Nick Cooke, Warren Stewart and Jon Samuelsson, who are part of the All-Terrain Nomads club. The club has been running officially for the last six months and its growth has been unbelievable.

The club was founded by long-time resident of Midrand Wayne ‘Frodo’ Burnett.

Burnett has over 25 years of experience in the cycling fraternity and was instrumental in the set-up of the 94.7 mountain bike race when it started.

The club caters for all types of mountain bikers, young and old. The club rides every Saturday unless there is a scheduled club race on that weekend.

The club has four groups with allocated trained ride captains; no rider is left behind on a ride.

“We have levels of riders ranging from the race-snakes, who consistently claim podium places for the club in major races such as the USN and Nissan series, down to your basic coffee or weekend warriors,” said Burnett.

The club firmly believes in developing youngsters. There is a ‘nippers’ section which caters for children from six to 12 years old.
