Bored? Get on a board

MIDRAND - The Waterski Federation of South Africa has launched its Learn2Ride development programme for previously disadvantaged individuals.

The initiative is funded by the department of sport as well as donors and is kicking off at StokeCity WakePark in Midrand.

What used to be a niche sport a couple of years back, has grown into an extreme sport. However, wakeboarding has always been perceived as only being accessible to the privileged few who have access to boats.

Learn2Ride aims to break this perception and open up the sport to the masses. Young people with disadvantaged backgrounds will have the opportunity to learn cable wakeboarding. Learn2Ride encourages community members who know of previously disadvantaged individuals who would like the chance to learn to kneeboard, ski or wakeboard, to get in touch with them.

Suitable candidates for the development programme should be able to swim unaided, they need to have a level of comfort in water, and must be previously disadvantaged to qualify. There will be free entry into the park and candidates will have free use of equipment, including life jackets, skis, kneeboards, wakeboards, wakeskates and helmets. They will need to bring their own swimming costumes, towels, caps and sunscreen.

Under 18 candidates must have an indemnity form signed by a parent or a guardian.
