Breakthru runners participate in Boston Marathon
MIDRAND _ Breakthru Midrand Striders runners Duane and Sharon Newman ran the Boston Marathon on 21 April.
Kyalami resident Duane Newman said, “Twenty two South Africans took a trip to the United States of America (U.S.A) to participate in the 42km marathon. The Boston marathon was run for the 118th time this year. Inspite of the Boston bombing incident during the race last year, many runners participated in the marathon.”
Newman said the race had a lot of entrants. “It was an exciting experience. Over 36 000 people took part in the race, with about 5000 of them from outside the U.S.A. The motto was ‘Boston Strong’, in honour of runners and members of the public who lost their lives in the 2013 Boston bombings,” he said.
Sharon Newman said, “The race had huge support along the route of the run and it was a real blessing to be able to take part in the race.”
Duane Newman finished the race in 3 hours 22 minutes and Sharon Newman finished in 3 hours 53 minutes.
Top finishing South African Lusapho April took the 15th position. Men’s wheelchair race top finishing was South African Ernst van Dyk who took 10th place.
