Marathon prepares canoeists for SA champs

MIDRAND - Ian Faller from Midrand, a member of the Centurion Canoe Club based at Rietvlei Dam, competed in the Gauteng Marathon Championships on 10 and 11 May.

The championships took place at Homestead Dam, home of the Ekurhuleni Kayak Canoe club, which provided the trials for selection of the Gauteng team for the SA Marathon Championships. This national inter-provincial event takes place at the same venue on 7 and 8 June.

On 10 May, K1 paddlers pitted their strength, fitness and endurance against each other in single canoes, which also included the guppy paddlers between 6 and 12 years of age, while on 11 May, the doubles championships (K2) took place.

Faller finished the 22km race which consisted of five laps and a portage run carrying the boat of 100m at the end of each lap, in a time of 1.58 minutes, to finish 27th overall.

The Gauteng Marathon Champs provides an opportunity for team selection for the national inter-provincial event which will take place in June, the South African marathon championships .
