Braving a raging river in preparation

MIDRAND - The Sasol Dam2Dam river race on Trichardtspruit was challenged by Raymond and Linda Rorich.

The married couple took on the river, which runs from Trichardts Dam to Tweedraai Dam near Secunda. The usually slow spruit becomes a raging, exciting torrent of water after a water release from one dam to the other creates a fast-flowing river experience.

The pair are looking to compete in the Hansa Fish River Marathon race in October.

The Sasol Canoe Club puts the race on annually before the major A grade Fish River Canoe Marathon, to introduce paddlers to a more technical and faster-flowing river to improve their skills and abilities, after having spent the winter months on the slower and simpler rapids of the Klip River in Meyerton. The spruit becomes a recognised B grade river, a step up from the gentle winter flows on Klip River, and is fast, with tight and difficult corners where quick reflexes are needed to prevent boat breakages.

The Halfway House husband and wife team have won a number of podium positions in the past year for this category, and this race was no exception as they finished the 18km race in 01:34:00, coming in 2nd in the double category, and 1st in the mixed doubles.
