Touch rugby fever in Midrand

GLEN AUSTIN - According to the director of diverse sports at Glen Austin High School, touch rugby has become an integral part of the school's sports calendar in Midrand.

Loshnee Iyer said pupils have shown great excitement about the sport, which began in term four in three schools.

“Sagewood College, Glen Austin High School and Blue Hills College are part of the touch rugby schools league. The schools’ season takes place from October to March and the provincial season begins in March, through to September,” said Loshnee Iyer.

Iyer stated that the sport has created a sense of healthy competition among the pupils, both boys and girls.

“Glen Austin pupils have been invited for trials, while the Sagewood team has been selected to represent the Northerns team in the U17 and U21 age groups, and has toured KwaZulu Natal with the Northerns Provincila team.”

She urged all schools in Midrand to get involved in the touch rugby league as there is a lot of exposure for pupils and a chance to interact with current and retired world cup players.

A pupil from Glen Austin High School Samkelo Mvelase said, ‘I can’t wait to start playing touch rugby next year, we are a young team, but we can beat the other schools.”
