MIDRAND - Throughout the year Midrand Reporter celebrated sporting achievements by individuals and schools.We take a look at some of these achievements.
- Tshepo Modise, a full-time tennis pro from Noordwyk, together with his doubles partner Michael Fooley took second place at Gauteng East Tennis Association Seniors Interpro2015 in Benoni.
- Summit Cycles, a mountain biking club, hosted a bike safety awareness ride.
- Debbie Dolphins Swimming School received a Hamlet award for their work with intellectually challenged people.
- Midrander, James Thorburn partnered with Pierre van der Merwe, both members of the local Centurion Canoe Club, for the Vaal River Canoe Marathon. The pair finished the race in a time of 05:50:00, came third in the sub-veteran category and a respectable 10th in the K2 category.
- Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge was won by 18-year-old Stefan de Bod, an MTN Qhubeka team member. q The Discovery Sport Summit was held at Vodaworld in Midrand.
- A Glen Austin amateur golfer, Mario de Melo, joined the winners’ circle at the Johannesburg regional qualifier of the 21st World Amateur Golfers Championship at Glendower Golf Club.
- Diverse Sports hosted a tour to Sri Lanka for young cricketers from different schools around Midrand.
- Beaulieu Preparatory School pupils participated in the Equestrian Schools’ League Nationals.
- Polo South Africa hosted the Polo International Horse Trials at Waterfall Polo Estate in Woodmead.
- Charity organisation, Acorn Foundation, held its annual Pro-Am Golf Series fundraising event at Blue Valley Golf Estate in Midrand.
- Seven-year-old Jaylin Sewell, a young Midrand gymnastics protégé, represented Gauteng at the South African Gym Games.
- Ewan Taylor, a 16-year-old Kart Racer from Midrand, has a bright motorsport career ahead of him.
- The Phela Live Soccer Challenge Championship finals were held in Rabie Ridge in October.
- The Motorite racing driver, Evan Hutchinson drove to victory as he steered the Motorite BAT Viper, navigated by Danie Stassen, to second in the Vryburg endurance race.
- The 2015 Galencia Property South African Derby was hosted at Kyalami Park Club.
- Greater Midrand area resident and golfer, Nicole Garcia, played in the IGT Tours’ Gary Player for Champions Academy Classic at Kyalami Country Club.
- Runners took part in the 2015 Midrand Striders ArthroChoice Advanced 21km, 10km, 5km races at Kyalami Equestrian Park.
- A group of people from Kanana started a gym session, a challenge to live a healthier lifestyle.
- Residents took part in the Spar Women’s race.
- Beaulieu College pupil, Cheyenne de Beer, was selected to represent Gauteng for Open Showjumping and Open Equitation at the 2015 South African Pony Rider Championships held in Pietermaritzburg.
- The Tatami Judo Club brought home 11 individual medals in the South African Judo Championships held in Stellenbosch.
- South Africa played New Zealand in the annual two-match 2015 BMW International Polo Series at Waterfall Polo Estate.
- Beaulieu Preparatory School pupil, Max Benade, came fourth at the Gauteng Duathlon Championship in the U12/13 category held at Germiston Lake.
- Midrand police organised soccer, netball and volleyball matches in a Sports Against Crime initiative.
