Striding in the new year

MIDRAND - The Midrand Striders began their year with a run in the suburb of Bedfordview.

The Midrand Striders participated in the Dis-Chem Pharmacies Half Marathon on 14 January which started from Bedfordview Virgin Active Club.

This year the marathon was celebrating its 17th anniversary and saw many runners from all over the province participating.

“This year Midrand Striders had 40 runners join in the festivities,” said spokesperson for Midrand Striders, Lwazi Khumalo. “Although it was a tough course so early in the year, the race had 6 500 participants from all over Gauteng bracing the Johannesburg heat.”

The Midrand Striders are based at Building Blocks Primary School on Harry Galaun Road and caters to all types of runners. The club hosts three weekly runs, fast time trials, track and hill work, and long runs on Sundays.

The marathon was won by David Manja and Irvette van Zyl, both of the Nedbank Running Club.
