Nizamiye netball gives back

MIDRAND – Local school presents R2 000 and a netball set to an orphanage.

Netball was the winner when Nizamiye Primary and High School hosted a tournament fundraiser for an orphanage.

Learners from the Midrand school had visited the Baitul Banaat Orphanage in Nigel in April.

While there, the school’s netball players got to play against girls from the orphanage on their makeshift netball court.

This comprised rusty netball hoops on a grass field.

Deciding that the girls were way better players than their ‘netball court’ catered for, Nizamiye hosted a fundraising tournament on 12 May.

Nizamiye, Baitul Banaat and Al-Aqsa, a school in Lenasia, were the competing teams.

They spent a day in the sun playing netball, raising R2 000 which was used to buy netball poles, nets and two balls for the orphanage.

“The players displayed amazing sportsmanship and cheered each other on in high spirits throughout the games,” said Nizamiye’s head of sports, Radia Monga.

“It was so heartwarming to see the joy on these girls faces.”

She said the event was evident that sport brings people together regardless of ethnicity, status, colour or creed.
