Midrand Knights Cricket Club unveils its first senior women’s team

MIDRAND – The team will commence training on 21 July.

Midrand Knights Cricket Club unveiled its first senior women’s cricket team at Marlboro Stadium on 15 July.

Club chairperson, TK Chettiar, was the architect of this project and has put together a very strong and enthusiastic side.

This team is already affiliated to Central Gauteng Lions, previously known as Gauteng Cricket Board, and will participate in the women’s leagues.

The team will commence training on 21 July to hone their skills in preparation for their first clash on 2 September in the club’s annual Junior Cricket Festival. The team of 16 players is a blend of youth and experience and will be led by Mirishka Peter and Maite Marageni, and coached by club head coach, Adam Peloakgosi.

As Women’s Month approaches in August, the club announced the women will not have to pay subscription fees for the initial season. Chettiar addressed the women in the presence of the club’s executive committee and emphasised the importance of female participation in sport.

He outlined the club’s vision of creating a female junior structure and the possibility of creating a second women’s team.

Chettiar said women’s cricket was fairly new in comparison to their male counterparts but was equally entertaining and on the rise.
