Promising start for Midrand rugby player

MIDRAND – Khensy Masingi said that fear is only temporary, while regret lasts forever as she leads women in a male-dominated sports.

Local female rugby player, Khensy Masingi is starting to make a name for herself in women’s rugby.

At the tender age of 21, she is already captaining the Tshuma Stingers female team and coaching the junior team. She was recently awarded Player of the Year, and Most Tries Scored’ for last year’s season at the team’s in house awards.

Masingi said that she had been active in many other sports but hadn’t considered playing rugby before. “Our coach Ndumiso Tshuma, suggested that I join the Stingers, and I actually realised, ‘This is exactly what I’ve been looking for’.

“But besides that, I joined rugby for fitness, the camaraderie that I build with my teammates and with the teams I play against, and the overall enjoyment that I get from playing a sport.”

After being awarded twice for the last season, Masingi explained how excited and happy she was to have been recognised for her efforts. She said the awards were an acknowledgement of a job well done and justification for the agony, the self-doubt, and the hard work that went into winning them.

“Awards can make us feel proud, happy, overwhelmed, and delighted. They give us validation and boost our confidence.

“With the experience as the captain and coach for the junior team, hopefully I’ll be playing for the Springboks in the next three to four years.

“It makes sense that you’d make the most money when you do something you’re interested and invested in. When you bring your heart and soul to work, the work should earn you more than when you’re dragging yourself in every day, but nonetheless, fear is only temporary regret lasts forever.”
