Midrand Striders to give back on Mandela Day

MIDRAND – Runners will give back to the community on Mandela Day.

Midrand Striders will give back to the community in its own way on Mandela Day this year.

With the nationwide lockdown in effect and the world in the grip of the coronavirus pandemic, the Midrand running club will honour former president Nelson Mandela on his birthday, 18 July.

“As a club that also speaks Nelson Mandela’s values, on Saturday the 18th we will be joining the masses across the world in uplifting our communities,” said the club’s Nomathemba Masuku.

She explained that the club has encouraged its members to do a ‘run with extra’-themed run.

This will see people run their own route and distance and, while maintaining strict safety protocols, carry an item or two of clothing to give to needy people in the Midrand community.

“The entire Midrand community is encouraged to also participate in this initiative and be it walkers, cyclists and motorists. If you are in a position to give away clothes let’s do our bit over the weekend and help our fellow brothers and sisters in these difficult times.”

Masuku said everyone should take extra precautions when handing out gifts to recipients, including observing social distancing, wearing a face mask, and sanitising.
