Gymnasts show off their skill their skills
CROWTHORNE – After many months of not being able to do what they love, gymnasts come back with a bang.
The crowd was amazed on 27 November as young gymnasts of Totsgames Gymnastics Club performed at Poplar Academy in Crowthorne.
Parents and siblings of the young athletes came eager to see what the boys and girls had to show off this year.
Coach Nelson Midzi of the club said normally they taught the children three activities. This included trampoline, floor exercise and vault, and children have the opportunity to compete in all three disciplines. “Before the competition, we took them each on the drills, practising with cartwheels, doing handstands and forward rolls. When the competition time comes, they combine all the drills together to form routines and compete in them,” said Midzi.
Highlighting the gymnasts’ progress, he added that most of the children such as Tatiana Douglas were committed. “She comes for training twice a week, some come once a week which is why she excels. But I saw progress in all of the kids… And also due to the fact that there was coronavirus, I was not expecting this sort of a turnout also.”
Midzi said it would be the same next year and they would have one competition in March, followed by another in September and the last one at the end of November.
Gymnast Iviwe Lemba, who won three medals in her age category, said she felt good about winning. She came first in the floor exercise and second in vault and trampoline, and said it was hard but she worked hard to win.
Keratilwe Mohale, who came first in the floor exercise, and second in trampoline and vault, said she did not expect to win. “I feel very happy as this is more than what I expected and it was not really that hard because I just pretended I was at practice.”
Tatiana, who came first in vault and trampoline and second in the floor exercise, said she did not know how she felt about her success. “I am just excited, I can’t wait to celebrate with a pizza and the family.”
