Safety the top priority for Midrand Striders

MIDRAND – Local running club hosts three weekly runs to keep its spirits up.

While major road races have been cancelled in January and February, Midrand Striders members have been enjoying three weekly runs.

Running club committee member, Lwazi Khumalo said last year was one that would not be forgotten, in so far as the running community was hit hard by lockdown restrictions.

“We saw many races cancelled by the Covid-19 pandemic and the race junkies resorted to using every inch of the garden to get some running done during lockdown Level 5,” Khumalo said.

“It was no different for Midrand Striders but by the end of the year we had adjusted to our new normal and resumed training whilst following all the Covid protocols.”

Since the move back to lockdown Level 3, most major road and trail runs have been cancelled. Central Gauteng Athletics has only given the green light to certain club runs when safety protocols are met.

“Midrand striders has undertaken the task of maintaining their members’ spirits and sanity with the midweek runs [Tuesday time trial and Thursday speed training] and the ever-so-challenging Sunday long run.”

The Sunday club runs are 10km to 24km and start at 6.20am, the Tuesday time trials are 4km and 8km runs at 5.30pm while the Thursday track session takes place at 5pm.

These start and finish at Midrand High School.

Khumalo said the health and safety of their members was the club’s top priority.

“While we will continue to host our events, we ask our members to adhere to health protocols of wearing masks, practising social distancing and sanitising hands at the water points.”
