Midrand Cricket Club juniors are ready to take a break

MIDRAND – Midrand Cricket Club's juniors halted operations following President Cyril Ramaphosa's speech where tighter lockdown restrictions were imposed due to the rising Covid-19 numbers.

Midrand Cricket Club has halted its junior matches and practices following the tighter lockdown restrictions.

Head coach George Mukoki said with the Covid-19 third wave on the increase, the juniors have taken a well deserved break.

He said the past two months have been busy for the young ones as they have had to play many cricket matches on Saturdays and Sundays.

“We are hoping that by the time any cricket action resumes for the young ones, we would have managed to dissect technical issues which have crept up during the season. As coaches, we have managed to see exciting possibilities with both bat and ball. Exciting new young players have shown that the future is setting up right ,” said Mukoki.

“It’s a pity that the U9s and U13s had just started playing in the Randburg Winter League but, due to the Covid pandemic, the games had to be postponed. The boys and girls have been tested skill-wise and when cricket returns we are expecting better cricket minds than previously.”

Mukoki added that with the Easterns Cricket Season expected to start in September, Midrand Cricket Club juniors will begin to compete against others in their age group.

He said their junior numbers have increased in the past four months meaning more teams could be registered for their club juniors.

“As coaches, we hope to see more numbers as we look to broaden the selection pool for our junior teams, as we are setting up to be an identifiable brand in the Easterns Cricket Union.”

He concluded, “In these current times we hope and pray all players, parents and officials are keeping safe with the intention of us finishing what has been a fun and interesting journey for the Midrand Sports Academy.”
