Midrand juniors are knocked out of Black Widow Tournament in quarter-finals
MIDRAND – Midrand Sports Academy's Junior cricket team was knocked out of the quarter-final of the Black Widow Tournament by the Randburg Academy
Midrand Sports Academy junior cricket U9 and 11 teams were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Black Widow tournament by Randburg Academy on August 23 at Delfos Cricket Club stadium in Roodepoort.
Head coach of the academy, George Mukoki, said in their first winter tournament, the junior teams had managed to hold their own and be counted among the best in the region.
He added that the academy was barely a year old and they had grown in numbers. “[The academy’s] first match was at the Joburg Winter League where they played some exciting cricket from U9s to U11s before the third wave, however, Covid-19 Level 4 Lockdown put a stop to the tournament.
“Since the resumption of most social activities, the academy has been playing in the Black Widow tournament which started on the August 7 and ended on August 23.”
Mukoki added, “Disappointment was the feeling the boys and girls experienced but after such a long winter and the burdens of the global coronavirus pandemic, we have seen a more positive response in games by the players.”
Mukoki said a lot still had to be done from a technical point of view to continue improving the players’ abilities, but appreciation had to be given to the players for handling the pressure well throughout winter.
“With less than a month left for the Easterns Cricket Union season to kick off, now all we can do is continue with the positive gains.”
