Relegated Spoilers beat in-form Indlovu in a league derby match

The Midrand derby saw a first half goal from Jabulani Masango earn Spoilers a first success in almost four months to halt their 25-game winless streak.

Although Midrand Spoilers have been relegated from the Joburg men’s regional league, the team still managed to shock Indlovu on May 13 with a 1–0 victory.

The Midrand derby saw a first-half goal from Jabulani Masango earns Spoilers their first success in almost four months to halt their 25-game winless streak.

Spoilers’ relegation is the first time since 2020. They are sitting last on the table with 16 points and above them is Wolfs with 23 points with only one match to play.

As Indlovu had been doing well, the loss came as a shock to their coach Thato Legodi. “I’m amazed by the result. It was a humbling experience and we give all the congratulations to Spoilers FC,” said Legodi.

“As a coach, you should be open to such results for your team. Rhulani [Mokwena] told me in my career that I will lose to opponents who don’t invest as much as I do, more often.

“I think this weekend was a shocking weekend for most teams – Atletico lost to a relegated team, Chiefs lost to SuperSport and Indlovu lost to relegated Spoilers.”

While Indlovu dominated the entire encounter, they couldn’t find the back of the net, and Spoilers earned their victory by being rock solid in defence after scoring their goal.

“As with every game, the performance of my players was superior. Unfortunately, the matter of scoring goals has been a concern and raises a red flag for next season.”

Indlovu’s centre-back Lukhanyo Ntsimbi Mapeyi, formerly a Spoilers player, said this loss had the most impact on him because no one wanted to lose to one of their former employers.

“I think what made us lose was that we underestimated them since they have already been relegated. We won the game in our minds before we played the match and that is exactly what happen when we played Ma-Africa. We need to change our mentality when we play against teams that are struggling,” added Ntsimbi.

Indlovu will play their final league game against another Midrand rivalry, Super Rovers on May 28.

As part of their preparations for the upcoming season, they intend to play all their players who did not receive much game time this season.
