Kyalami couple’s running journey proves love and passion can last a lifetime
For this couple, a hobby such as running can never stop them from achieving their everyday tasks and life.
Kyalami couple Sharon and Duane Newman share an undying love and passion for running.
The pair met in 1993 through Sharon’s brother, who worked with Duane, and soon built a relationship founded on friendship, love, and shared values. It was only in 2002 that running became part of their lives.
That same year, they joined the Midrand Striders and have been longstanding members ever since.

They pride themselves on participating in as many running competitions as possible.
“I mean, we haven’t really gone all over the world, so there are still a few more international competitions we see ourselves running in,” said Duane.
For Sharon and Duane, running has become much more than a hobby. It has been a shared journey that has strengthened their bond and kept them active together for over two decades.
Duane initially started running as a way to lose weight and improve his fitness. Sharon watched his commitment from the sidelines before deciding to join him a few months later.
Since then, the pair have remained dedicated members of the Midrand Striders and have completed numerous races together.

One of their proudest recent achievements was earning their permanent numbers at the 2026 Two Oceans Marathon, a milestone awarded to runners who have completed the iconic race multiple times.
They also regularly participate in the Comrades Marathon, including this year’s event.
This year will mark Sharon’s 20th Comrades and Duane’s 19th, highlighting years of dedication to long–distance running. As part of their preparations, they do morning runs at 05:00 and go to the gym at least three times a week.
Reflecting on the secret to balancing marriage and running, the Newmans believe that having common interests has played a key role in their lasting relationship.
