Kyalami will once again become the centre of South Africa’s equestrian world when the Toyota SA Derby returns to Kyalami Equestrian Park from October 1 to 4.

The event will feature four days of showjumping, dressage, showing and other equestrian competitions, alongside family entertainment, food stalls, markets and Toyota vehicle experiences.

The derby forms the grand finalé of the 2026 Toyota Equestrian Series, a four-year partnership between Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) and Kyalami Park Club aimed at growing and strengthening equestrian sport in South Africa.

The series has recorded increased participation and spectator engagement this year, culminating in the SA Derby, where the overall series champion will receive a brand-new Toyota Hilux D/C Legend, sponsored by TSAM.

Heather Mpofu, event director at Kyalami Park Club, said the derby had earned its reputation as the toughest title to win.

“The Toyota SA Derby pushes horse and rider to their limits, showcasing what is possible through hard work, passion and a deep respect for the sport and those who have helped shape it,” said Mpofu. “This year, the SA Derby turns 61, and it’s a birthday we intend to celebrate in style.”

The derby features 18 obstacles and has remained largely unchanged since the event began in 1965, preserving its status as one of the toughest and most prestigious titles in South African equestrian sport.

The micro speed derby, known for its speed and skill, will be among the weekend highlights, while the Compleat Horse competition will offer a R20 000 prize purse. Other competitions include the show horse derby, working riding derby, working hunter derby, and dressage derby.

Off the course, visitors can enjoy food and markets, Toyota vehicle displays and driving experiences, and activities for children.

TSAM vice president of marketing Glenn Crompton said the derby represented the best of equestrian sport. “Through our partnership with Kyalami Park Club, Toyota is proud to support a platform that continues to elevate the sport, inspire talent and bring communities together,” said Crompton.
