MBOMBELA – Not so long ago, an 18-year-old pregnant woman was kidnapped by a foreign national and brutally assaulted until she miscarried.
It’s alleged that the man dragged her after he forcefully offered her a lift to the CBD, but then found herself in the streets of Phumalanga Township in Hammersdale in KwaZulu-Natal.
Recently Mpumalanga News learnt that within a week, about seven people were kidnapped in different incidents after they were offered a lift by a white Ford Ranger in the CBD.
One of the victims, who can’t be revealed for safety reasons, said he was offered a lift in a vehicle and the driver bought two bottles of ice tea at a garage and offered him one.
After drinking it, he started feeling dizzy and powerless. He alleges that the driver refused to drop him off in the CBD and he drove straight to Pienaar.
“He refused to drop me off in town and drove around Pienaar. In the process, he took all my belongings. He then opened the door while the vehicle was moving and pushed me outside. I didn’t know what was happening and I found myself at Mthethomusha,” he said.
Some of the people were dumped in bush in different areas such as in Siphelanyana and Mafampisa.
Spokesperson for the local police station, Lt Jabu Ndubane, confirmed all the incidents. “We suspect that the driver puts something in or rubs the ice tea bottle with something to intoxicate the people so that he can rob them of their belongings.
“We warn people not to get lifts from strangers,” she concluded.
