Rapist to remain in jail

A rapist who targeted local women in 2010 received a harsh sentence in the Nelspruit Regional Court.

PIENAAR – A rapist who targeted local women in 2010 received a harsh sentence in the Nelspruit Regional Court.

Mr Mduduzi Mnguni (27) received a life sentence after he was found guilty on various charges of rape and housebreaking and was declared unfit to own a firearm.

One of the shocking acts he committed that left many residents in shock was when he raped a 85-year-old woman in 2012 in her house. Information at the police’s disposal indicated that Mnguni used the same modus operandi in his crimes.

He broke a window to gain access to the houses of the victims.

The spokesperson of the local police station, Lt Jabu Ndubane confirmed that Mnguni did terrorise the community. “He broke windows to gain access to victims’ houses.”
This is not the first time such a harsh sentence has been passed by the court.

Last year a gay man also got a life sentence after he was found guilty on various counts of rape in which he targeted schoolchildren.

One resident, who is happy about the recent court ruling, Mr Andrian Mabaso, said, “If our justice system can continue to hand out these sentences to perpetrators of crime, South Africa will become a better country.”

The Nguni Cluster of Mother’s Union in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa welcomed the judgement, saying, “We are very pleased with the judgement, it shows that the law is taking the issues of woman abuse seriously.
