Community marches against abuse

The community is saying enough is enough to all the men who abused women and children.

MSOGWABA – The community is saying enough is enough to all the men who abused women and children.

The theme of the march was black and white as a symbol of togetherness. Sadness was visible on their faces as they marched to Daantjie police station, their mouths strapped with tapes last week Thursday when they handed over a memorandum containing concerns about women of the surrounding areas who always report cases that are never dealt with.

The march was embarked upon to raise awareness for the 16 days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children. The organizers of the march were Lifa Lesive Development Agency and other local NGOs encouraged women to speak out.

According to the march coordinator, Mr Sibusiso Mthembu: “The aim was to reach out to every resident, females and males since statistics show that every gender is affected by violence.

We have noticed that most community members do not bother to report these perpetrators any more. They left them to continue brutally kill or rape children.

“We wanted them to join together in saying “No”. Some of the members revealed that crime and other abusive cases are rife and most women complained that they report cases to the police yet perpetrators are still roaming the streets.

“We hope and pray that all concerns raised would be implemented as some confess that they no longer feel safe in their homes and the police station dealt with them in order to have a free generation where every child and woman knows their right and responsibilities,” he said.

After arriving at the police station, the women ripped off their black tapes and symbolically shouted “No” in unison.
