Wife of an abductee fears for life

This was after her 47-year-old husband, Mr Luis Chauque, had allegedly been abducted from their shack by a man known to her, and two police officers.

RIVERSIDE – A 26-year-old woman told Mpumalanga News that the
Malalane police had threatened to assault her and that she now feared for her life.

This was after her 47-year-old husband, Mr Luis Chauque, had
allegedly been abducted from their shack by a man known to her, and two police officers.

“We were sleeping around 04:00 when the men came and demanded that my husband go to the car with them. “They then started hitting him and dragged him to their car shouting at him that he had raped a young girl,” said Ms Nomsa Mashaba.

Mashaba said before speeding off, that the man she referred to as Mr Langa, came back to the shack and threatened to kill her if she told anyone what had happened.

“He told me that he has lots of money and he can bribe all the police and threatened to kill me with muti if I told anyone.” Mashaba stated that the incident happened on May 10 and she had not
seen her husband since.

She broke her silence after community members approached her and demanded to know her husband’s whereabouts. “I couldn’t take it anymore and spilled the beans, but instead of setting me free,
the truth got me into serious trouble and my life is now in danger,” she cried, adding that the police took her to the
station on Monday where they threatened to beat her up for disclosing what had happened the morning her husband
was abducted.

Community members are now seeking justice and say the perpetrators must be brought to book. “We won’t rest while people who are supposed to be protecting the community are doing the opposite,” said Mr Samuel Lukhele.

When we called the police station, they confirmed that a missing-persons case had been opened
