Health department launches probe into two cases of negligence

The health department has instituted an investigation in two health facilities in the province.

MBOMBELA- The health department has instituted an investigation in two health facilities in the province.

This follows reported cases of alleged negligence.

According to the department’s spokesperson, Mr Dumisani Malamule, it is alleged that a pregnant woman was denied assistance after reporting that she was due for labour at Matsulu Clinic.

“According to preliminary information received by the department, the woman arrived at the clinic and reported that she was having contractions.

After being assessed, nurses told her that it was a false labour and she later delivered the baby in the toilet,” said Malamule.

Meanwhile, a second investigation is under-way at Piet Retief hospital in Gert Sibande District about alleged high mortality rate of children under five years.

MEC for Health, Mr. Gillion Mashego has expressed shock into the two alleged incidents.

“We have appointed a team to conduct investigations into the two issues and once the investigations have been completed we will decided on the next course of action which will be informed by the outcomes of the investigations,”stated Mashego.
