KaNyamazane community refuses to be addressed by premier

The situation remains tense today in KaNyamazane.

Police are firing rubber bullets. Some residents are retaliating by throwing stones.

Foreign-owned shops were looted, including a liquor shop at the local mall. Schooling in the area has also been affected.

Earlier today the premier of Mpumalanga, Refilwe Mtsweni, together with some MECs, attempted to address the community. They were unable to, as the residents have made it clear that they want to be addressed by the president, Cyril Ramaphosa.

Residents have taken to the streets, decrying the apparently slow progress of fixing storm-ravaged houses in KaNyamazane, Tekwane and Ntokozweni.

The community claims that the contractors are taking too long to repair their storm-ravaged houses, and as a result, they have been left in the lurch.

Over 2130 houses were affected by the hailstorm in May this year.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, said they have the situation under control.

“We may not have sufficient police officers, but we are comfortable with the number that we have to keep the situation under control. Should there be challenges, we expect local leaders and community forums to assist.”
