Alleged SARS fraudster in court for over R1.9 million fraud

Thomi Mduduzi Masango a former human resources manager from a Barberton mine was arrested after he managed to defraud the SA Revenue Service (SARS) over R1.9 million.

Masango (41), appeared before the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after he was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Mpumalanga for alleged income tax fraud valued at almost two million rands.

“It is alleged that Between 2011 and 2014, Masango who was a Human Resource Manager at a local mine allegedly submitted falsified tax return claims to the South African Revenue Services (SARS) on behalf of workers. SARS lost approximately R1.9 million as a result of the accused’s illegal activities, “said According to the Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi.

Sekgotodi said Masango has been charged with 41 counts of fraud. He has been granted a  R5000 bail and is expected back in court on the 4th of December 2018, pending further investigations.
