Murder in Mataffin strikes at midnight

No arrests have been made into any of the shootings which occurred in Mataffin and police are calling on the public to assist with their investigations.

Sources in crime-fighting have dubbed Mataffin the “Cape Flats” of Mbombela due to the high crime rate in the area. “Some security members and emergency services sometimes do not want to respond to incidents in that area at night, due to the high danger risk,” said a reliable source.

A man was murdered outside his house and in another incident, a woman and her children were shot at in their home, in Mataffin on Monday. Police spokesman, Capt Zandile Gqawa said at about 05:00 the SAPS were called to Rob Ferreira Hospital where they discovered that a 24-year-old man had been brought in with a fatal gunshot wound.

She added that, according to a preliminary investigation, the deceased had been with his wife at the time.

“They were driving to their house at about 00:40. The wife got out the car and went to open the gate when she heard gunshots. She went back to check on her husband, and found that he had been shot. She rushed him to hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.”

Gqawa said the motive of the shooting is still unknown and police are investigating a case of murder. No arrests have been made yet. On the same day, another incident happened at about 02:20, also in Mataffin.

A 35-year-old woman was asleep with her children in her house when she heard gunshots being fired outside. “She heard footsteps and after a few minutes she went outside to investigate.

She found spent cartridges on the floor.” The woman went back inside and discovered that her wardrobe had two gunshot holes in it. “We are investigating an attempted murder. So far, no arrests have been as made yet.”
