Young man creates his own sneakers wash business

He is the proud owner of Quick Quick Sneakers Wash in Matsafeni.

The ever-increasing rate of unemployment among the youth has encouraged a 26-year-old lad from this Kasi to embark on a unique business of washing people’s tekkies for a living.

Mandrick Mabuza said, “It all started after I washed and posted four of my tekkies on Facebook. People started following me and requesting me to wash their own tekkies.

From this business, I am able to pay my electricity bills, buy toiletries and to look after myself, without expecting everything from my mom,” he said.

On a busy month, he earns between R1 500 and R2 000 from cleaning his clients’ tekkies. They come from different areas in town, including Mataffin, Stonehenge and KaMagugu.

“I charge an extra fee if I have to collect in an area five kilometres from Mataffin. Most of my clients understand that. Some even pay me extra without me asking to do so,” he said.
Mabuza said the youth should look at skills shortages in their communities and start small businesses to address those shortages. He believes self-confidence and serving his clients with a smile keep him going.

“I do not mind what my peers say about my business. I love my job and want to see it grow so I can employ other unemployed youth when it gets hectic,” he said.
