Motorists urged to be cautious on roads damaged by the rain

The recent rains have caused great damage to many roads across the province.

In some areas overflowing rivers have led to flooding particularly in low-lying areas.

Some roads in Nkomazi, City of Mbombela, Thaba Chweu, and Msukaligwa local municipalities have been badly damaged as a result of these rains.

Therefore Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Gabisile Shabalala urges motorists to be cautious on the road saying that they should avoid driving through flooded or low-lying areas especially when it is raining heavily.

Shabalala also warns drivers to be mindful of new conditions such as potholes and falling rocks which have been caused by the bad weather.

The MEC again appeals to communities to avoid crossing overflowing bridges or rivers.

“Motorists and communities should refrain from crossing overflowing rivers and streams because they will be endangering their own lives. Low lying areas and flooding dams should be avoided at all costs,” states the MEC. She has once again reminded drivers to keep their headlights on when driving during the rain, keep adequate following distance and reduce speed particularly when visibility is reduced.
