Fraud-accused municipal worker still on the payroll

The Nkomazi Local Municipality (NLM) employee under investigation by the Hawks for alleged Covid-19 procurement fraud, is still on the payroll and still has access to public funds.

“We cannot comment on this, as the investigation is still under way and we do not want to affect its progress,” said the spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Capt Lucy Dineo Sekgotodi.

The Hawks initiated an investigation into alleged irregular expenditure of Covid-19 procurement funds in July, wherein the appointment of contractors and service providers was inconsistent with the procurement regulations.

The Hawks seized municipal documents from NLM’s offices in Malalane. “The monetary value involved is approximately R27 million,” said Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the Hawks’ spokesperson at the time.

“The DPCI’s serious commercial crime investigation, digital forensic laboratory and the local SAPS’ criminal record centre seized several documents from different offices, that will assist in the ongoing probe,” said Mulaudzi.
