Mpumalanga army support base crowned the best

On Friday members of the military celebrated the award. Four army members were also honoured for their sterling work, both at work and in the community.

The South African Army Support Base (ASB) in Mpumalanga received the award for being the lowest risk exposure unit in the country. This recently happened during the army’s gala event in Potchefstroom.

“The purpose of today is to celebrate the awarding of the provincial ASB as the top unit in the SA army. It entailed being evaluated on all the common functional fields throughout the 186 units within the military. We were privileged to be awarded as the winning unit.

“We were awarded by the army chief personally. As a gesture of thanksgiving to our heavenly Father who blessed us, we decided to have this thanksgiving church service followed by the unit function to celebrate our success,” explained Lt Col Coen van Heerden, the ASB Mpumalanga commander officer.

“It is a real honour for me to be a commander of a winning team. This success was achieved by everybody playing their part,” Van Heerden said.

He added that the entire army will continue to follow its theme, which is to “define and refine, command and lead as critical success factors in restoring the dignity of the SA army to its rightful glory”. “All our activities for this year will revolve around that theme. This will entail rendering our units to a very high standard of military professionalism and cleanliness,” concluded Van Heerden.
