Motorists urged to observe Covid-19 curfew

Following the recent spate of fatal vehicle crashes, the MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, has called on motorists to avoid being in conflict with the law by travelling outside curfew hours.

Shongwe’s call comes after three people were killed on the N4 Toll Road near Machadodorp. This happened as a result of a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a light motor vehicle in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

The deceased include the driver of the light motor vehicle and two children, all certified dead on the scene.

Four occupants in the minibus sustained serious injuries and are being treated at a nearby hospital. “We must all observe the regulations. Those who disregard the Disaster Management Act, including motorists, will be arrested and charged unless they have permits to be on the road,” said Shongwe.

The investigation into the recent crash is already under way. Shongwe encouraged motorists to plan their long-distance trips in such a way that by the time the curfew starts, they have reached their destinations. He has in the meantime sent his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
