Mpumalanga’s social development department shares tips on how parents can ensure their children’s safety amid kidnapping scourge

May 29 to June 5 marks the annual National Child Protection Week.

National Child Protection Week is commemorated annually in the country to raise awareness of children’s rights.

The Mpumalanga Department of Social Development’s child protection manager, Lizzy Nyoni, said it is important to raise awareness regarding the protection of children.

She listed tips that parents and caregivers can keep in mind to ensure kids’ safety.

• Tell children to never accept gifts from strangers and not to talk and give personal information about themselves and parents to strangers.
• Never leave children alone or unsupervised, even at home.
• Kids must not go anywhere alone or agree to be accompanied by strangers.
• Teach children your name, surname and phone number. Parents can also write everything on a piece of paper and put it in their child’s school bag.
