Players continue to show off skills at third leg of Kumbaya Africa Individuals Chess League in KaMagugu

Spectators are allowed in the playing area, provided they adhere to the Fide rules, and remain quiet and orderly.

As Kumbaya Africa Individuals Chess League continues the competition appears to be getting harder for the participants.

The third leg of this league took place on Saturday June 4 at Meridian Karino School in KaMagugu. The first round was on May 7 and the final round of the league will be on July 30. The Coach Chess Academy, under Mpumalanga Chess, is the host of this league.

 

This is a 14-round chess league played over 12 weeks.The players are divided into two sections: Prestige and section A (juniors).

Six of the 14 rounds have been played. There are eight more which will be played on the following dates, June 18, July 23 and July 30.

 

The academy’s Eddy Bhila said, “It was interesting day of chess as round five and six were played. We now have clear leaders on both sections of the league.
“Dicken Nkosi is currently leading in Section A of the league with six points.
“He took the lead after winning against Alen Jameson who is fifth. Sheirly Macanja is in third place.”
“Adolph Nkosi, the older brother of Dicken, leads the prestige section with a score of five out of the six games played.

“Adolph only lost against Tholo Phumuza who is currently at third place. Adolph took the lead after his win against Allie Phiri. After losing, Phiri was in second place.”

Trophies will be awarded to each section’s winner. Medals will be given to the top three players – gold, silver and bronze.

The prize money for first place in prestige is R3 000, second is R2 000 and third R1 500. In Section A first place gets R2 000, second R1 500 and third R1 000.
