Man intends to establish library in Malekutu Trust
Bongi Shongwe said his plan is to create a facility with a collection of materials, including media, books and Wi-Fi that the community can access for free.

Driven by the desire to see change in his village, a man from Malekutu Trust wants to open a community library.
Bongi Shongwe (36) has started a campaign to collect new and old books, furniture and equipment.
He said he wants to create a facility that offers free educational resources to everyone.
According to him, his vision materialised when he noticed how young people were struggling.
“The young people in my community do not have access to a library nearby. If they need books or computers, they need to fetch a taxi, which costs them money they do not have. Most of them are from poor backgrounds, and they are fighting to change their history by doing something better. I want to help them do that by establishing a facility that will provide the much-needed services.”
As an unemployed community member, he said he understand the challenges they face daily.
He said most young people end up involving themselves in things that are bad for them.

According to him, this library will not only provide knowledge, but will also assist with solving other social ills.
“Some young people start using drugs and abusing alcohol due to the lack of facilities that cater for their needs.
They spend their time at taverns, because that is what they have in the community. This can change if they are provided with other facilities. I think this library can help decrease teenage pregnancy and create employment for others. This is because I would like us to have a librarian, and if things go as planned, we might hire other role players in future.”

He currently has managed to make arrangements with the local traditional leaders and councillor to use an available community centre.
“I have the space at our youth development centre, and I would like to urge the public to help by donating the equipment we need. I have the dream, but I do not have the funds to bring it to life, although I believe there are people and companies who will understand my plan.”
