Tonga police confiscate over 100kg dagga, arrest suspect

The suspect, who was found with dagga estimated at a street value of R185 757, was granted bail of R3 000 by the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court and is expected to reappear in July.

A 36-year-old male suspect appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Wednesday May 3, for dealing in dagga.

A provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said Vusi Nkalanga (36) was arrested in Mzinti near Tonga on Tuesday May 2. The police had reportedly received a tip-off about a suspect who was driving a white light delivery vehicle fully loaded with dagga.

“Our members responded swiftly to the tip-off, and Nkalanga, who is believed to be from KaMaqhekeza, was found driving in the residential area at Mzinti in the vehicle that matched the given description. The vehicle was stopped and searched, and stuffed dagga rolls weighing about 124kg, with an estimated street value of R185 757, were found inside,” he said.

Mohlala said the suspect was arrested and charged with dealing in dagga, and the vehicle was confiscated for further investigation.

Nkalanga was granted bail of R3 000 during his court appearance. He is expected to appear in the same court again on July 3.
