Convicted ex-cop’s sentencing postponed by Mpumalanga High Court
Mugiyo Mabunda remains in custody until his next court appearance in November.

The sentencing of the convicted ex-cop, Mugiyo Ulrich Mabunda, was postponed in the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court on Tuesday (September 20).
Mugiyo was convicted in June 2022 for the premeditated murder of his wife, Tebogo Mabunda. He shot and killed Tebogo outside their house in Stonehenge, Mbombela, in 2020. He drew a gun on her and shot her before shooting himself, but has since recovered.
On Friday August 12, the matter was postponed to September 20 for the probation officer’s report.

The Mpumalanga NPA’s spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said this was due to the power failures and unavailability of water in the high court building.
“The case was postponed to Friday November 4 in the same court for sentencing.”
Kgopotso Matuwe, Tebogo’s sister, said they were expecting the case to be concluded on Tuesday.
“They have explained to us that some of the things that are happening are beyond their control. We have to accept this. Things like they do not have water and electricity.”
Matuwe said they are praying that the delays should be reflected in the sentencing.

“This is because of it being delay tactics on their side. We hope that the sentencing reflects that state resources and our time were wasted. We are using money to come here just for a postponement.”
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union, Mpumalanga ANC Women’s League and Bella’s Athletics Club picketed in support of the victim.
