Mayor escapes shooting in Standerton unharmed

The Lekwa Local Municipality's mayor, Delani Louis Thabethe, narrowly escaped death following a shooting yesterday.

The Mpumalanga SAPS are investigating a case of attempted murder after a shooting occurred at the home of Lekwa Local Municipality’s mayor, Delani Louis Thabethe, in Standerton.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the shooting took place last night, May 17.

“The victim was unharmed and no one has been arrested so far. A team of investigators has been assembled under the leadership of the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela,” Mdhluli said.

Mdhluli urged anyone with information to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send information via the My SAPS app.
