UMP hosts the Luhambo Lwemhlahlandlela seminar

For its 10th anniversary celebrations, the seminar was just one of the events UMP has lined up.

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) hosted the Luhambo Lwemhlahlandlela (Pioneering Journey) seminar on Friday August 25.

The university is celebrating 10 years since its establishment in 2013. As part of the build-up it hosted this seminar in its multi-purpose hall.

UMP vice chancellor, Professor Thoko Mayekiso, said, “When I took the leadership at UMP on November 1, 2014, I was acutely aware of the huge responsibility and privilege of being a pioneering leader. It is a newly established university. My commitment to the pioneering role was unwavering.”

Mayekiso said in a society that still suffers from patriarchy and toxic masculinity, leadership does pose serious challenges for females. “Without seeming to be advocating sexism in leadership, one should admit that there are unique challenges that face female leaders in higher education. It was evident therefore that one would need to approach this task of being at the helm of the institution with unfettered imagination and compassion,” she explained.

The impact of the vice-chancellor scholarships on the lives of our students cannot be measured.
“We have awarded 220 scholarships, starting from 2016, which cover full tuition, accommodation, meals, learning material allowance, a monthly stipend, and personal development,” said Mayekiso.
