Ward councillor and one other fatally shot in Calcutta

Two people were killed and a third wounded during a shooting in Calcutta. One of the deceased has been identified as a ward councillor.

A shooting in the Calcutta area on Saturday night, September 23, left two people dead and one wounded. One of the deceased has been identified as a ward councillor.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, an armed suspected opened fire on a ward councillor, Lot Nkuna (55), David Matsane (52) and a third person in Tsema-Marhumbu in Calcutta at about 20:50. He said Nkuna’s body was found inside a VW Polo, and it is supected he may have been sitting in the driver’s seat at the time of the shooting.

Matsane’s body was found on the ground outside the vehicle.  The third victim, who has not yet been identified, sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to a hospital for treatment. Mohlala said that seven 9mm spent cartridges as well as one live round of ammunition were found on the scene.

He said the motive for the shooting is still unknown at this stage. No arrests have yet been made.
