Department of Health commemorates Breastfeeding Week at Bethal Hospital

This annual event is celebrated during the first week of August to raise awareness about breastfeeding and its advantages.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health conducted a successful World Breastfeeding Week programme at Bethal Hospital in the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality on Wednesday, August 7.

World Breastfeeding Week is an annual celebration held from August 1 to 7 each year. The event was celebrated under the theme ‘Closing the Gap – Breastfeeding Support for All’.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health’s spokesperson, Dumisani Malamule, said the aim of the event was to highlight the importance of breastfeeding and the impact it has on nutrition, food security and the well-being of mothers and their babies.

The Gert Sibande District Municipality’s director of primary healthcare, Zonke Sibande, acknowledged mothers who breastfeed their babies in her keynote address and emphasised that they should get the support they need.
