A community welfare service organisation, SAVF Mpumalanga, and several community safety stakeholders visited Sibhulo Secondary School in KaBokweni on Wednesday, August 28, for a road safety campaign.

This visit followed an accident on the KaBokweni Road in which seven school learners had been struck by a vehicle on August 7. This paper reported that the pupils had been walking home from school between KaBokweni and Khambula when the incident happened. They sustained injuries that ranged from minor to moderate.

More than 100 colourful beanies made from reflective wool courtesy of Wheel Well and Halo Beanies were handed over to the learners during the campaign.

The visit incorporated road safety education by the local road safety officer, Thandi Maseko, and a provincial inspector of the KaBokweni Traffic Office, David Thwala. The initiative was also supported by social workers of the Department of Social Development.

SAVF Mpumalanga’s manager, Lindiwe Mabaso, said the school appreciated the gesture and hoped that the beanies and the messages imparted would make a difference in the pupils’ lives.

“We need to join hands with the school to highlight the importance of road safety in the community, and these beanies will ensure that the young pedestrians are visible when walking to and from school,” Mabaso said. She added that the SAVF’s social workers also provided counselling to the pupils who were involved in the accident.
