This initiative is aimed at doing away with surgical backlogs.

The Mpumalanga’s health MEC, Sasekani Manzini, launched a 100-day cataract surgery marathon initiative at Tonga Hospital on Friday, September 27.

The aim was to eliminate the surgical backlog and restore vision to patients.

During the launch, Manzini said the provincial eyecare team, featuring health professionals and ophthalmologists, was aiming to administer screenings and biometry to approximately 300 patients that day.

“We are optimistic about the programme’s success and its desired outcomes, specifically the early treatment of cataracts to prevent vision impairment.”

Maria Hlatshwayo, a patient from Block B, expressed her gratitude to the department for this initiative, saying she was nearly blind, with severely impaired vision, but following the cataract surgery at Tonga Hospital, her vision has returned and she can now see and read.
Manzini encouraged elderly individuals to prioritise regular medical check-ups to enhance their well-being and extend their life expectancy.
