Somalian in Middelburg Magistrate’s Court for possession of unlicensed firearm

He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear in court on November 22.

A Somalian national was remanded in custody after a brief appearance in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday, November 18.

Aklilu Eliasi was charged with the possession of a firearm without a licence or a permit.

His next court appearance is scheduled for November 22.

He was arrested during Operation Safer Festive Season on Sunday, November 17, when the Middelburg Flying Squad members stopped a Nissan NP200 during their routine patrol on the R35 to Bethal.

The firearm was confiscated for further investigations.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the accused and his vehicle were searched and a revolver with five live rounds were found.

“The accused failed to produce a firearm licence, which led to his arrest. The firearm was confiscated for further investigation and ballistic testing will be conducted to ascertain if the firearm was previously used in the commission of crime elsewhere.”

“We cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges against the suspect as the investigation continues,” said Mdhluli.
