Mpumalanga MEC warns scholar transport about learner safety

Scholar transport operators were told to ensure their vehicles align with safety regulations as they will be closely monitored in the new year.

The MEC for public works, roads and transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, has called on all scholar transport operators to ensure that their vehicles are fully roadworthy and compliant with safety regulations before the reopening of schools on Wednesday, January 15.

He said as the learners prepare to return to their classrooms, their safety and well-being remain a top priority for the department. “With the new school term around the corner, it is imperative that all service providers take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our learners. Roadworthy vehicles are not just a legal requirement; they are crucial for safeguarding the lives of our children as they travel to and from school,” said Thomo.

Failure to comply with safety regulations will not be tolerated, and appropriate action will be taken against those who do not prioritise safety.

He emphasised the importance of regular vehicle maintenance checks, including brakes and tyres. He urged transport operators to conduct thorough inspections and rectify any issues prior to the commencement of the school year.

Thomo said the department would deploy transport inspectors on various routes in the province to monitor scholar transport operations. “The safety of our learners must not be compromised. Parents rely on transport services to safely convey their children, and we urge operators to uphold their responsibilities to the highest standards. Failure to comply with safety regulations will not be tolerated, and appropriate action will be taken against those who do not prioritise safety,” he said.

Thomo said a collaborative effort between transport operators, parents and the government is essential to ensure that children have a safe journey to school.
