Mkhuhlu learner obtains fifth position among Mpumalanga’s matric top achievers

Aureate believes the key to success is to to surround yourself with like-minded individuals.

Among the top 10 matric candidates who made the province proud on January 14 when the 2024 results were announced, was a learner from Mkhuhlu who obtained fifth place.

Aureate Precious Mthembu (18) attended Makhosana Manzini High School and passed matric with eight distinctions. She said her dream is to study medicine at the University of Witwatersrand or the University of Cape Town.

She was accepted at both institutions and now has to choose between the two.

“When I got the call from my school informing me that I was a part of the top achievers, I could not believe it at first because the final exams were tough. This achievement reinstilled the hope and confidence I had in myself,” she said.

She attributed her success to intense preparation, revision, getting enough rest and her support system.

“During exam season, I was under a lot of pressure. I did not have much time to prepare, but the tablet I received at school was of great help. I ensured that it had no distractions such as games or social media apps. I utilised it to access past question papers.

“When I was feeling overwhelmed, I would pray to God to give me strength to handle the pressure. I had a study group. I always asked my teachers if I needed clarification and I made sure to get enough sleep because there is no use in straining yourself,” she added.

Aureate says her role model is her older sister who is a qualified doctor. She added that her sister obtained six distinctions in matric.

“My sister set the bar high and she inspired me to work even harder to make my family proud. I am grateful to have a support system that believed in my capability.”

According to Aureate, the key to academic success is to surround yourself with like-minded people and believe in yourself.

“You are what you think you are. I never thought negatively about myself. I always believed that I would pass exceptionally well. As a learner it is important to know what you want out of life and to surround yourself with friends whose vision is aligned with yours,” she said.
