Mbombela: Three killed as six passengers flung from back of bakkie into Crocodile River

Three people sustained injuries and were transported to hospital.

The bodies of a woman and two men were retrieved from the Crocodile River after six people were flung from the back of a bakkie, over a bridge railing, near Mbombela.

The incident occurred on the N4 between Alkmaar and Schagen this afternoon, April 13. The three survivors were transported to the nearest hospital by Emer-G-Med.

Emer-G-Med’s Martin Jeffrey said two survivors were in a critical condition and one in a moderate condition.

He said they reacted to the scene at about 15:30.

The bakkie, travelling westwards, lost control when a tyre burst on the bridge near Schagen.

Lowvelder is aware of unconfirmed reports of a seventh occupant, a three-year-old, who is said to have been swept away by the river.

The spokesperson of the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mmusi Moeti, said an investigation into the incident is already underway.
