University of Mpumalanga explores digital transformation in higher education
The university met with its stakeholders to discuss the future of technology in the education sector.
The University of Mpumalanga (UMP), in partnership with Higher Education Information Technology South Africa, hosted the Autumn General Institutional Meeting on April 2.
The event brought together higher education information and communication technology (ICT) leaders to discuss key issues, including digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity and the future of technology in education.
UMP’s vice chancellor, Prof Thoko Mayekiso, welcomed the delegates.

“It is an honour for the UMP to host this event. As a new institution, we value such experiences. There is a clear alignment between today’s event and the strategic direction of our university. As an engaged institution, the UMP will always seek out opportunities for collaboration with all its stakeholders in maximising the development of human potential and socio-economic progress,” she said.
In the keynote address, the chief information officer of the Witwatersrand University, Stanley Mpofu, mentioned the importance of collaboration, innovation and sustainability in higher education. “The role of ICT professionals as strategic enablers in digital transformation cannot be overstated. Collaboration is not just a word, it is a true catalyst for progress and a powerful advantage for public universities,” Mpofu added.

He highlighted the potential of AI to enhance teaching, learning, improve efficiencies and transform education.
Mpofu also emphasised the importance of ensuring data protection and providing IT teams with the necessary skills to manage AI initiatives.
